My Presentation @ the University of Burgundy

OK, today, I gave my 2nd presentation of the year at the University of Burgundy, France, on following topics.

  3. State of Cloud Computing industry, latest news, i.e. mergers and acquisitions, the evolution of cloud computing platforms, coolest technologies, i.e. NoSQL, Functional Language, …

  5. Methodology to manage risk

Yes, it was done in French again to a stadium of ~100 students. Since yesterday, I have shared with students my experience of starting company, and providing cool technologies to IT giants, i.e. Salesforce, Amazon, Oracle.

Cloud Computing Seminar @ the University of Burgundy

Today, I gave a presentation in front of the faculties & students at the University of Burgundy, computer science department. It was a nice experience, because I had to give the entire presentation in French. That is right. Everything was in French. I had to make the powerpoint presentation in English. But, I talked entirely in French with some help from Professor Christopher Nicolle, as there are special words for Information Technology.

Database – la Base de Donné

Data Center – la centre de Donné

Computer – l’ordinateur

Bandwidth – la bande passante

Memory – la memoire vivante

Hard disk – le disque dur

CPU – le processeur

Storage – le stockage

There were 80 -100 students in the auditorium. It was packed. I spend an hour talking about cloud computing and the latest movement in the information technology industry in USA, e.g. REST vs. SOAP, AJAX, iPAD, MVC, etc. For most student, these information were completely new. And, they were very absorbed my presentation, since the IT industry usually leads the academia by a few years. And, they felt my presentation was very exciting, similar to going to the amusement park for the 1st time in their life. The main point was getting them current on the latest technology and concepts in IT. So, the presentation was a complete success today. Now, I have more presentations (in French also) for Master / Ph.D. students and local companies who want to use cloud computing in their IT operation. More information coming soon…..

French Grammar, Oct 15

Time (Pendant) vs. (pour) vs. (en) vs. (Dès)


Pendant -> used for exact time.
Vous prendrez ce médicament pendant 5 jours.  (You take this medicine for exact 5 days.)
You vais rester ici pendant 5 jours. (I will stay here for exactly 5 days.)

Pour -> used for approximate time
Je suis ici pour 3 semaines. (I will be here for about 3 weeks.)

En -> something that started and finished.
J'ai lu ce livre en 2 heures. (I read this book in 2 hours.)
J'ai lu hier soir pendant 2 heures. (I read for about 2 hours.)

Dès -> starts immediately.
Dès mon arrivé à l'aéroport, j'ai télephoné à quelque personne. (As soon as I arrived in the airport, I called someone.)

Use of Subjonctif


Le but / La Conséquence

Pour que / Afin que => subjonctif
(Subjunctive mode is used when the subject of the main sentence is different from the secondary sentence.)
(If the subject of the main sentence is the same as the secondary sentence, infinitive form is used.)
J'ai fait des pâtes pour qu'ils n'aient plus faim.
J'etudie le français pour + infinitif ....

de sorte que / de façon que / de manière que => subjonctif (different subjects in the main and secondary sentence)
(otherwise it becomes)
de sorte que + subj / de façon à + infinitif / de manière + infinitif

Imperatif, que + subj.

de peur que (ne) / de craindre (ne) + subjonctif

I am back in Dijon. This week I am continuing to study French. So, here are some of the stuff that I learned.

Vocabulary

n'importe que   ->   any, no particularly important
chômage -> jobless, unemployed
le replacement -> replacement
le remplacement -> substitute
renvoyer / licencier qqn -> fire someone / rightsizing
engager / embaucher -> hire someone
démissioner -> resign / quit a job
dépasser / se passer de qqch -> to pass someone for  promotion
peine -> sorrow
lorsque -> while
alors -> then
ainsi -> thisway
propriétaire -> owner
locataire -> renter / lodger
bêtise -> stupid/silly

Body Shape

Squelettique  -> scrawny (skeleton-like, very thin)
maigre -> lean

Grammar

j'ai ma propre une voiture. / J'ai une voiture -> I own a car. (The sentence construction is bit different from English.)
Il a sa propre une voiture.

good (adj) => meilleur (better), well (adv) => mieux

Dans 5 jours -> In 5 days,

Depuis (il y a ... que)
